In case you're wondering what would happen if the power kept going out at Candlestick Park, and the Monday Night Football game between the San Francisco 49ers and Pittsburgh Steelers had to be stopped for whatever reason … well, don't ask the NFL about that, because the logistical nightmare would be just about unprecedented.
According to the Twitter account of former NFL VP of officiating and current Fox Sports analyst Mike Pereira, "If the game were to get suspended it would resume at some point at the exact point it was suspended. Stats and scores would remain."
At approximately 8:00 p.m. Pacific time, a senior NFL Executive told ESPN that another another outage, would keep the league trying to stay as long as possible and try to finish the game Monday night, unless it becomes a public hazard with the crowd. If that happened, and the game would have to be suspended, the NFL would look to reschedule for a Tuesday daytime completion. Should it be impossible to complete the game at Candlestick Park, the game would be moved to the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, the home of the Oakland Raiders.
In other words, there's no fifth-inning rainout here. The Steelers would have to stay in San Francisco and resume the game at the first available opportunity. That would be a huge pain for them, as they'd then have to catch a cross-country flight home before playing on Christmas Eve. Two bits of good news for them, though: The Steelers are playing at home next, and they'll be facing the "challenge" of the St. Louis Rams.
Things would be a bit easier for the 49ers from a travel standpoint — they're heading up to Seattle to face the Seahawks on Saturday. At this point, there are multiple crews from Pacific Gas & Electric on site trying to fix the problem, and according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, Candlestick Park is the only customer affected by the outage.
