I've always suspected that players not knowing the score of a match happens more than we know. Once you start playing tournaments, coaches and parents always stress that the current point, not the score, is important.
One thing I've never thought is that players wouldn't know the score on match point. Yet that's exactly what happened this weekend to Svetlana Kuznetsova in a Fed Cup tie between Russia and Serbia. Kuznetsova was serving at 5-4, 40-15 in the fifth set when she caught Ana Ivanovic flat-footed on a return. As the fans cheered and Ivanovic approached the net to shake hands, Kuznetsova prepared for the next point:
It's clear she was clueless, but wouldn't her move be the ultimate "take that!" in tennis? Win a match and act like you had no idea it was match point? "Oh, what's that Novak? I just won the match? Sorry, I can't be bothered to keep track of such trifles as me beating you down." The sportsman in me is happy that players never do such things. The blogger in me? Devastated.
