For the last couple of years, some of the most influential names in golf have suggested various ways roll back the golf ball. But if the sport wants to get serious about leveling the incredible distance gap for players, there's only one way to make that a reality: Go to a wiffle ball.
That's right, golf should put a wiffle ball in play. There, I said it. Can you imagine guys hitting one of those plastic balls at the British Open with the wind gusting at 30 mph? Nobody would break the record for the lowest score in tournament history, that's for sure. The only problem? We could see an increase in slow play. So the idea isn't completely full-proof.
While the idea may have some holes, GolfingWorldTV put the idea in play, giving the some of the top players on the European Tour the chance to go head-to-head in a wiffle ball long drive competition. The current long drive is only 32 meters (roughly 35 yards), but you have to admit, it's pretty fun to watch golf's best struggle to hit the ball as far as most of us hit a chip shot.
